Updated: Sep 14, 2020

A read that is both hard to get out of your head and simultaneously impossible to think too hard about. Nova Ren Suma will leave you spinning with this fantastic novel.

This is a truly lush YA thriller. Unlike many in this genre Imaginary Girls is filled with thrilling scenes counterbalanced by perfectly crafted, powerful, characters and a realistic feeling world which will leave any readers questioning their grip on reality.

'Chloe's older sister, Ruby, is the girl everyone looks to and longs for. After a night with Ruby's friends goes horribly wrong and Chloe discovers a dead body floating in the reservoir, Chloe is sent away: away from home, away from Ruby. But Ruby will do anything to get her sister back, and when Chloe returns home at last, she finds a shocking surprise. As Chloe flirts with the truth that Ruby has hidden deeply away. she finds herself walking a precarious and deadly tightrope between what's real and what lurks beneath.'

Nova Ren Suma has an incredible talent for this kind of story. Her intricate writing style and honest portrayal of emotions lays the foundations for an all consuming story which easily turns the readers mind in circles and delights in lacing confusion and captivating mystery into every plot step.

As we get to understand the complex relationship between Chloe and her enchanting sister Ruby, we also get a peek into their shared history, and the awful relationship shared with their absentee mother. Chloe, though relatively independent, relies on Ruby on an emotional level that is hard to fully grasp; their relationship is motherly and friendly in equal measure, sending the issues they face together and the story they're telling into complex dynamics.

Where Ruby is outgoing, talented and confident she is also hectic, uncontrolled and verging on the tightrope of desperation. Meanwhile, throughout the story, Chloe seems to be the 'safe' sister; she has goals beyond the small lives of her family, and hopes and dreams she's fighting to pin down to reality. Together they are an immense force, driving the story forward, and tempting us to believe in impossible things.

Moments throughout this book are so incredibly well described that they are harrowing, trembling, alive, in ours minds as they cry out for attention. This book certainly stays with you, though so well written it's impossible to put down, the conclusion and all that builds up to it will stay bright in any readers thoughts for days after closing over the last page.

We Give Imaginary Girls Five Stars.
