The Cerulean, by Amy Ewing

The incredible Amy Ewing leaped onto everyone's up-and-coming author watch lists with her debut book, The Jewel, which she shaped into a transformative trilogy; The first in a new series, The Cerulean shows off the true majesty of Ewing's creative and literary skill. Launching her straight into a secure position as one of our top ten authors of all time; and we think you'll feel the same after reading this gripping novel.

'Sera has always felt as if she didn't quite belong among her people, the Cerulean, who live in the City Above the Sky. She is curious about everything; especially the planet that her City is magically tethered to; and can't stop questioning her three mothers, her best friend, Leela, and even the High Priestess. Sera has longer for the day when the tether will finally break and the Cerulean can move to a new planet. But when Sera is chosen as the sacrifice required to break the tether , she feels betrayed by everything she'd been taught to trust. In order to save her City, Sera must throw herself from its edge and end her own life.

'But something goes wrong and Sera survives the fall, landing on the planet below in a place called Kaolin. Sera has heard tales about humans, and she quickly learns that the dangers her mothers warned her of were not just stories. Meanwhile, back in the City, all is not what it seems, and the life of every Cerulean may be threatened is Sera is not able to find a way home.'

Smoothly transitioning between the perspective of four main characters, this powerful female lead novel reveals the secrets of two very different worlds. Ewing shows of the true prowess of her imagination, weaving an idyllic magical Utopia in with a world which feels similar to an Earth of times past.

Our main human characters embody human failings and strengths, playing off of each other and their circumstances as they fight for their own individual recognition from behind their fathers shadow, and for Agnes, from under the weight of being a Woman in a man's world.

Meanwhile The Cerulean themselves present a purity, and wonder, which at first seems perfect, but as the story unfolds proves to only be skin deep.

The twists and turns of this novel, the gorgeous and loving impression of magical creatures and mystique, are all made more enjoyable by the intelligent and realistic feel of the characters. It is impossible not to be sucked into this world, and impossible to put the book down once opened.

Ewing draws us in with such deft tack that the revelations laced throughout this book hit their marks with a natural skill, leaving us gasping, clawing at the last page desperate to know what will happen next.

An excellent, genre throwing, read that should not be left off anyone's reading list.
